HIGIENIZART, Pedro Barreiro
(2021)
Synopsis
Labour precariousness is an evident reality for most of the artists in Portugal. Therefore, in the last few years - or ever since - there have been several parallel activities to which professional artists have to dedicate themselves in order to obtain full or supplementary pay, so as to survive.
From waitressing in restaurants or at the bar counter, to driving public-service cars or tuk-tuks, answering call centres, school support, prostitution, drug dealing, supermarket stock replenishment or cleaning services, there are many examples of activities that artists have to perform in order to continue to work as artists.
In this project, which we have entitled HIGIENIZART, we frame one of these activities - cleaning services - in the field of contemporary art. Thus, HIGIENIZART is presented as a cycle of performances that will consist in the cleaning of private homes, performed by artists, being the spectators of these performances the inhabitants of the homes that host them.
Two open-calls will be launched, one at the beginning of September and another in mid-November, through which all people interested in receiving one of the performances of the HIGIENIZART cycle may register.
It is also important to mention that this hygiene and art service will be provided at no cost to the people hosting these performances in their homes, since the HIGIENIZART project is fully funded by the Portuguese State through the Garantir Cultura Programme, thus guaranteeing the fair remuneration of all the professionals who are part of our team.
